WHY ARE YOUR ROOF SHINGLES CURLING?

Your roof protects you against the elements and adds to the curb appeal of your home.  What happens, though, when your shingles start to curl?  It can be tricky to figure out what causes issues with your roof, and it can be challenging to determine if you can repair it or if you’ll need to replace your roof entirely.  Has your roof started curling and buckling?  If so, you’re not alone.  More than half of homeowners will have this problem at some point in their lifetime.  It’s not a sign that the roof will fail immediately, but sometimes it can indicate your roof will be dangerous soon.

When you notice shingles lifting on your roof, they’ve most likely begun to curl.  Curling is the most common lifting issue, where the corners of the shingle have come loose and started to “curl” up.  You may have noticed damaged shingles from inside your home if you have a leaking roof or sunlight peeking through areas of your attic ceiling.  If you’ve only seen damaged shingles from the outside, call in a professional roofing company.  They’ll safely inspect the roof from the top to best determine the cause.

Curling, buckling, and warping are just a few problems that homeowners have with their shingles.  Sadly, curling shingles can create cracks that eventually spread across the roof.  These defects cause leaks, which are prone to occur because of heavy rainfalls and windstorms.

Most Common Causes

MOISTURE

This is the most common cause of buckling and curling shingles.  It can be a consequence of your shingles absorbing too much moisture in the roof decking during an installation or another process.  Not to mention that it can happen after heavy rain or storms because your shingles accumulate a lot of water.  Unwanted moisture can make the shingles buckle and curl.  The absorption of moisture by the felt underlayment can also cause buckling because it pushes the shingles up.

Without proper ventilation, that moist air trapped in the attic can make your shingles curl or buckle.  As you can guess, this lack of airflow can also allow mold to thrive and rot the roof.

The summer is another reason why moisture is such a big problem.  In the hottest months of the year, your air conditioner works harder, causing a lot of wear and tear, which can be troublesome if you have poor attic ventilation.  That improper airflow will make your roof wear out quickly, making the shingles curl, and putting your house at risk.

AGE

As shingles age, they become more vulnerable to damage.  Different types of shingles have different lifespans, which you can usually estimate based on their warranty.  If your asphalt shingles are out of warranty and more than 20 years old, it’s an excellent idea to have them replaced.  It’s crucial to have roofing professionals perform routine inspections.  A regular maintenance schedule will let them repair current issues while detecting and preventing future ones.

IMPROPER INSTALLATION

Some roofing specifications may have included the number of nails allowed per shingle, the length or type of nail and ventilation measures.  Neglecting these standards and requirements can cause future roof issues.  For example, if the roofers installed your shingles with too few nails, the corners will only be partially secure and vulnerable to roof curling.  Additionally, if the shingles’ alignment keeps them from adhering to the tar holding them in place, they’ll come loose and bend at the edges.

POOR MATERIALS

There are times when manufacturers use poor materials to design their shingles.  These shingles can often curl due to a defect discovered after they were already installed on your roof.  These problems might affect your roof’s warranty and change your roof’s overall look and quality.

When it comes to curling shingles, blame could fall on the shingle manufacturer.  It is possible that your roof shingles were simply made with flaws.  In this case, make sure you have a roofing professional document the issue on your behalf for warranty purposes.

Your Current Shingles Were Installed Over Old Ones

Roofers and homeowners sometimes layer new shingles over old shingles.  While this is not typically a code violation, it is generally a bad idea.  The reason why is simply that new shingles cannot seal properly when they are placed over old shingles.  It also covers up other hidden problems that may be lingering in the original roof.

This shortcut frequently causes roof shingles to blow off in strong winds and it also increases the chances of curling.  If your roof has been overlaid, it is likely that the manufacturer may also void their warranty.
