What Are Soffit and Fascia?

Even when you have a great contractor you trust, it’s very useful to know about the various parts of your roof, how they function, how to take care of them, and why and when they might need to be replaced.

Soffit and fascia are two roof components in your roof’s gutter zone, which is critical for getting water away from your house.

How Soffit and Fascia Work

Soffits

Soffit is a word for the exposed area under the eaves of your roof.  Since your soffit is located on the underside of your roof, it’s often not visible in terms of curb appeal.  However, soffit can still be seen when you’re close to the home and when you’re underneath it.  Soffit is usually the same design and color as your home’s siding, but can be different depending on your own personal tastes and preferences.

Soffits are typically made of vinyl and, since an important function they have is to let air circulate in your attic, they are usually perforated to let air through.

A good soffit will be able to stand up to the elements, which is important because soffits are likely to be exposed to the wet and damp.  Maintaining your gutters well is a good practice for keeping your soffits in good condition.  If you have to get your soffits replaced, it’s a good idea to use vinyl because it’s likely to last a long time.  Soffit can be made from wood, aluminum or vinyl.  It’s important that you have a soffit material suitable for the climate you live in.

Roof Fascia

Fascia, roof fascia, or fascia boards are horizontal boards that run under the roof edge.  Fascia hangs over the wall of the building and provides protection to the rafter and interior structure of the roof.  Besides, fascia also provides support to guttering, hence serving a key role in keeping your house sturdy.

What is the Purpose of Roof Fascia?

Besides providing an aesthetic appeal to the building, fascia safeguards and supports the overall structure of the house, it acts as a layer between the interior and the outdoor.  This helps prevent exterior elements, like pests, birds, and rodents from entering inside the roof and loft spaces.  Additionally, it also helps maintain the sturdiness of the house by securing gutters in place and preventing water from leaking into the internal roofing.

Have You Made the Right Choice of Fascia in Your Home?

The type of fascia you use lays the foundation for keeping your house in good shape.  Fascia comes in different materials.  Below are different options that are available in the market. If you feel you have the wrong material on your house, you can get it replaced with a better one.

Wooden Fascia

Wooden fascia is typically the most preferred choice due to the common use of wood in homebuilding.  Another reason why most homeowners prefer wood is its affordability. However, wood is not a water-resistant material and thus is subject to deterioration over time.  If you have wooden fascia, make sure that you take proper care of it through regular maintenance.  If regular maintenance is a hassle for you, it’s better to replace it before it’s too late.

Aluminum Fascia

If you prefer durability, aluminum is a great option.  You can use aluminum alone or as a means to weatherproof the wooden material.  Although it can cost higher in installation, it can increase the lifespan of your house.

When to Replace Soffit and Fascia

Again, it’s important to maintain your gutters so that your soffit and fascia don’t create any problems.  Soffit may become damaged if your gutters are overflowing, which is especially likely to happen if they are clogged, or if ice is damming up in your gutters over the winter.

It’s important to maintain your fascia because of their protective function, but also because they tend to be highly visible.  If they’re in bad condition, they may detract from the attractiveness of your house.
