Located at Rocks State Park in Pylesville, this Maryland gem is worth checking out.

It’s a short hike to the area but once you arrive, it’s worth it.  While you can visit the falls year-round, summertime is particularly enticing. You can wade in the cool water or stand right under the falls for a truly natural experience.

Today is National Hot Dog Day!  Celebrate the day by eating hot dogs!

The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball.  Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

4 Common Summer Roofing Problems

I’m sure you’re thinking “summer”?   Isn’t that the one time we don’t need to worry about our roof?  Although the winter is probably the harshest on your roof, summer comes with its own set of problems. This is the perfect time for you to ensure that minor roofing problems don’t become bigger ones in the winter.

Here are some of the most common issues for the summer:

1) Moss Growth – Algae and Moss grow the most in the summer.  It can cover a large part if not your whole roof over time. The issue with this is that moss causes moisture damage and rotting of the wood underneath. Over time moss can become more attached and may require pressure washing to remove.  This is when you should consider asking for professional help.

2) The Sun’s UV rays – Shingles can actually dry out and crack over the lifespan of a roof.  Dry shingles can eventually fall off, leaving some sections with little to no protection.  This is one of the problems that is associated with the aging of a roof and can be a sign that your roof needs replacing soon.

3) Wind/Rain – Summer can have some unpredictable weather.  High wind speeds and rain are definitely possibilities.  Wind can lift shingles and what seems like minor damage can turn out to be a bigger problem if the rain gets in and leaks through the ceiling.  After a storm, you should always check around your roof.  If you notice a piece of a shingle on the ground, it may be an indicator that you need a roof inspection.

4) Ventilation – As hot air rises, if your attic doesn’t have a proper ventilation system, it can be a problem.  Hot air will be trapped in the attic and create excess moisture issues.  This is one of the things that easily shortens the lifespan of your roof.
