Soffits & Fascia Board

A soffit is the material connecting an exterior wall to the edge of the roof under the eaves.

Soffits can be made from aluminum, wood or another type of material.  Properly installed soffit provides essential ventilation and air circulation to reduce excess moisture that can cause rotting and decay of the roof’s structure.  It promotes directional air movement through the eaves and rafters of your home, helping it to stay in great shape both inside and out.

Fascia board is important as they carry the weight of the rain gutters and water attached to them.  The fascia board is the visual board attached to the end of the roof rafters.

If your gutters are leaking or constantly overflowing it is a good bet that these fascia boards have been exposed to water and potential rot.  Often we are not able to determine the extent of damage to these boards until the existing gutters have been removed.

On occasion, all the boards will need replacement, but it is more common that only sections, especially at corners, need replacement, helping to keep costs low.

WHAT IS THE FASCIA BOARD?

While this roof component is completely visible, not everyone knows where it is.  Basically, the fascia board refers to the material that runs along the roofline and serves as the finishing edge (or trim) that connects to the edges of the trusses.  Do you see the board that holds your gutter system in place?  That’s the fascia.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

The fascia board helps give your roofline a neater and more finished look, but that’s not the only thing it’s good for.  By covering the edge of the roof, the fascia board helps protect your roof and home from wind-driven rain.  Since moisture won’t end up in the space underneath the roof, the rafters and trusses (which make up the roof structure) will remain free from mold growth and rot.  The fascia board is generally made of wood, but it’s also available in vinyl, aluminum, and plastic.  Each material has its own pros and cons.  If you haven’t been able to decide, just turn to a Pro.

HOW DO YOU PROTECT THE FASCIA BOARD?

Given how the fascia board can affect your roof’s longevity and performance, you’ll want to take measures that keep it in great condition.  For instance, you can:

  • Have a drip edge installed to deflect water away from the fascia board.

  • Keep your gutters clean and clog-free.  Otherwise, water will back up and damage the fascia.

  • Check the fascia board regularly for cracks, discoloration and splinters, and have them repaired or replaced as necessary.
