4 Ways to Protect Your Roof Against Heavy Rain this Spring

Water is your roof’s main enemy, and rain alone is a major threat to your roof.  ere are five things you can do to protect your roof against heavy summer rains:

  1. Fix the Leak – If you see any water spots on your ceiling or walls, there could be a roof leak causing it.  If you are unable to find the source of a leak, call a roofing contractor immediately to repair the leak before it causes any structural damage or mold growth. On the outside of the roof, look for dark patches or lines. These likely indicate a leak.
  2.  Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts – This isn’t a fun job, but it is a necessary one. It is crucial to clean your gutters regularly. Heavy rains cause leaves, pine needles, twigs, and branches to fall and clog up gutters. Once your gutters are clogged, the water backup can damage your roof and even sometimes cause the gutters to fall over time from the excess strain from the weight of the water.
  3. Check the Flashing – Flashing is the thin pieces of weatherproofing material that is designed to prevent water penetration at objects like chimneys, skylights, vent pipes, etc. Check the flashing for signs of loosening or corrosion that could render it ineffective.   Check that the sealant isn’t cracking or peeling away. Make sure to pay extra attention to the flashing where the roof meets a headwall or a sidewall, and roof valleys.
  4. Have Your Roof Inspected – Having your roof inspected by a professional roofing contractor will confirm that any weak points in your roof are secure and ready to take on a rainstorm. A licensed roofing contractor will also have all of the proper knowledge, tools, safety equipment, and insurance to get the job done safely.
