MORE INFO BELOW!

THERE ARE A LOT OF BRICK HOMES IN WASHINGTON DC. BELOW ARE SEVERAL COMMON PROBLEMS.

Masonry crack repair has always been a constant in the masonry industry. The earth moves, buildings move and masonry cracks appear and this will continue into the future as well. Do you need a masonry crack repair on your home?

1.) Settlement Cracks – These common masonry cracks usually manifest as a ‘stair step crack’ or a crack that steps up as it moves horizontally across the wall. Found at or close to the corners of the home, they are common and easy to perform a masonry crack repair on. Just watch and expect additional movement if the settlement has not stopped.
Solution: Contact your local pro to have these cracks repaired to keep water, bugs and reptiles from entering the home.

2.) Thermal Expansion Cracks – A vertical or stair step crack usually located in the upper portions of the masonry can be caused by thermal expansion. Bricks walls expand when heated by the sun and if expansion joints are not present, can cause cracks. These cracks appear anywhere within the surface of the sunny wall or in close proximity to abutting walls.
Solution: Contact your local pro for an evaluation. Some can be serviced with a simple masonry crack repair, others need a pro to evaluate and may require an engineer’s analysis to determine the cause and type of repair needed.

3.) Steel Expansion Cracks – Another common crack occurs at the upper corners of doorways, garage doors, windows or any opening. The usual culprit is the steel lintels that supports the masonry above these openings. This is due to the daily and seasonal differential movement between the steel and the brick materials which expand at different rates.
Solution: Contact your local  pro to address these issues.

Meridian Hill Park drum circle

A long-standing Sunday evening tradition, the Meridian Hill Park drum circle attracts musicians, dancers, families — you name it, they’ll show up to enjoy improvised drum jams that can include dozens of percussionists. Each week, revelers shed their inhibitions amid the drumming and dancing. Many say the drum circle gives them a spiritual and social lift that’s hard to find anywhere else in Washington.

TODAY IN HISTORY!

1958 – The remains of unidentified soldiers killed in World War II and the Korean War are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier sarcophagus was placed above the grave of World War I soldiers that was built in 1921. The Tomb of the Unknowns is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater.

The white marble sarcophagus has a flat-faced form and is relieved at the corners and along the sides by neo-classic pilasters, or columns, set into the surface. Sculpted into the east panel which faces Washington, D.C., are three Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. The six wreaths, three sculpted on each side, represent the six major campaigns of World War I. Inscribed on the back of the Tomb are the words:

Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God

The Tomb sarcophagus was placed above the grave of the Unknown Soldier of World War I. West of the World War I Unknown are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Those three graves are marked with white marble slabs flush with the plaza.   For more information about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier click this link: https://bit.ly/2UuaxYC.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT DC

And atop the Capitol building…

There’s a bronze statue called the Statue of Freedom. It’s more than 19 feet tall and weighs around 15,000 pounds. It depicts a woman wearing a headdress in the shape of an eagle’s head, feathers and all.

The city is not named who you think it is named for.  Washington DC is technically named for George Washington, which is obvious. But its also named for Christopher Columbus (The District of Columbia).

British troops set fire to the Capitol building in the War of 1812, but rain showers minimized the fire and the damage. Mother Nature was on America’s side, clearly. Repairs took four years.
