Chimney Flashing
Flashing is the metal band that wraps around the base of the chimney to seal the joints between the chimney and roof and protects against moisture and leaks. Flashing is installed in two pieces, an upper piece and a lower piece that overlap to create watertight seals. Chimney flashing is crucial to preventing leaks and needs to be installed properly, but all too often, poorly installed flashing can cause leaks and extensive damage if storms come through.
Chimney Crown
While not as common as flashing damage, damage to your chimney’s crown can be even more problematic and cause more extensive leaking and damage. The chimney crown is the concrete or cement layer at the top of your chimney. The crown is there to seal the flue or the chimney’s opening. Damage to the crown can be caused by aging and severe weather over time. It’s important to fix a cracking or decaying crown as soon as possible by sealing and motoring small cracks or even re-bricking portions of the chimney. If cracks and damage to the crown are not repaired early, a complete chimney replacement might be necessary.
Masonry Repairs
If not monitored and repaired early, small cracking and decaying in the masonry of the chimney can begin to cause major issues and lead to the need for a new chimney. Oftentimes, damaged or fallout bricks need to be replaced. Additionally, mortar joints suffer damage from weather and become brittle, allowing for water to seep into your home. Tuckpointing is used to repair and improve these mortar joints and save homeowners from further damage and the need for a new chimney.
Flue Cap
While the chimney crown tops off the masonry walls, the flue cap protects and covers the flue. A damaged flue cap can lead to a number of problems including a blocked chimney, leaks and water damage to the masonry.
