Although asphalt shingles are known for their durability, they may suffer from problems over time.  Below are some common shingle issues:

1. Blistering

Blisters are elevated sections on the shingles that are caused by different factors.  Small ones are often considered part of the aging process.  If the shingles are quite new, however, blisters may be a manufacturer’s defect. They may also be caused by poor roof ventilation.

2. Curling

Curling is typically a moisture-related issue.  Moisture may get in the shingles during the manufacturing process.  It may also accumulate in the shingles because of poor ventilation.  The dimensions of the shingles may change when the moisture eventually escapes.  Depending on the severity of the problem, you may need to tab down the shingles using hot glue or replace the entire roof.

3. Raised Shingles

Improper installation may lead to raised shingles that are not strong enough to resist wind uplift.  Shingles should have the right number of fasteners in the right places. This is one of the reasons it’s important to hire a licensed and certified for roof replacement or repair.  If the roofers aren’t certified and don’t have the required knowledge and skills, they may not be able to install the shingles properly.  This may void your manufacturer’s warranty.

4. Premature Cracking

Surface cracking, which doesn’t split the shingles completely, is part of the aging process.  Cracking may also occur because of stress, shingle movement caused by high winds, and deck movement.

5. Thermal Splitting or Tearing

Thermal tearing happens when extreme temperature changes cause the shingles to crack or split completely.  This problem affects the waterproof integrity of your roof. When undetected, the cracks or splits may let moisture in through the shingles and other layers of the roof.

6. Granule Loss

Similar to surface cracks, granule loss usually signals the end of life of your shingles.  There are times, however, when extreme granule loss happens even if the shingles are not at the end of their life span.  If this is the case, your shingles are experiencing premature deterioration.
